Kelly has appraised, managed, sold, and acquired rural properties for clients throughout Iowa for Hertz Farm Management since 1986.

In 1989, Kelly was recognized as the Outstanding Soil Commissioner in Southwest Iowa. Kelly has served as chair and trustee for Iowa State University Agricultural Foundation, association director and secretary of Southwest Iowa Farm Business Association, and chair of Extension Council in Taylor County. He is past President of the Iowa Association of Soil and Water Conservation Commissioners and currently the chairman of the Taylor County Soil District and past Director for Iowa State University Agriculture Alumni for Southwest Iowa.

Kelly grew up on a home farm in northwest Missouri. In 1963 he and his wife moved to southwest Iowa, where they currently reside. Kelly and Irene have four sons and twelve grandchildren. He is an active member of the St. Clare Church.
