Kirk has appraised, managed, sold and acquired rural properties for clients since 1979 and is licensed in Iowa and Illinois as a real estate broker. He is an active member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA), currently serving as Co-Chairman of the Government Relations Committee, the Iowa Chapter ASFMRA, serving as president in 2003, and Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.

In recognition of his agricultural leadership, Kirk received the 1995 National Association of Conservation Districts and ASFMRA National Farm Manager Conservation Award, 1995 Iowa Chapter ASFMRA and Iowa SWCS Farm Manager/Landowner Conservation Award. He was recognized as a Berg Fellow by the Soil and Water Conservation Society in 1994. In 1993, he was named Farm Manager of the Year by the ASFMRA. He also received the 1992 Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District Farm Manager Award.

Kirk grew up on an eastern Iowa grain and livestock farm. His history of agricultural leadership includes Iowa 4-H State President in 1974-75, Iowa FFA State Secretary in 1975-76 and trustee of the Iowa 4-H Foundation from 1975-1982.
